Pen & Ink course – Belper
Course description: This is a 10 week art course, specifically looking at the medium of pen and ink. For years I’ve always carried a pen and pad around with me and have sat and scribbled whenever time has allowed me to. I just find the permanent simplicity of drawing with a pen really challenging and appealing. This course will look at various different pens (drawing pens, dip pens, fine liners and the humble but much underrated biro), using brushes and liquid ink. It will explore the use of colour. Look at specific mark making techniques and styles. Themes and subject matters will vary each week. I’ll look at perspective, portraits, architecture, textures, still life, landscapes, figurative work and even something a bit more mixed media towards the end of the course. Most of my classes/courses have a real mix of learners. Some very accomplished & experienced, and some who haven’t picked up a pencil or pen since they left school. Please don’t be scared if you are the latter of the two. I will always spend a lot of time with ‘new’ learners and will bring in a range of tasks that vary in difficulty.
It’s always a bonus if learners have some of their own equipment. You’ll get to know your own stuff a lot better than borrowing bits and pieces all the time, but don’t panic if you haven’t. I can’t provide lots of absolutely everything, but I will bring along a selection of pens, inks, brushes, pencils and paper each week.
If anyone is keen to get themselves any pens…
This pack of 5 drawing pens for just over £5 is really good value and I use these kind of pens an awful lot – Uni Pens
If you have a bit more money to spend, these are much better quality and will last you a lot longer – Pigma Micron Pens
You can get drawing pens in sepia or packs of various colours too.
Most fine liner pens that you can pickup fairly cheaply in most shops can be really nice to draw with
A last but by no means least… Some of the nicest drawings I’ve done have been with a cheap 50p biro. They really are lovely to draw with.
I could continue to add to this list. Coloured inks, brusho, paper, dip pens, brushes etc. The list is endless. If anyone is wanting to get some equipment, but you’re a little unsure, just drop me an email and I’ll happily help.
