I was asked a little while ago to think of something that still fills me with childish excitement. Now I’m not sure if this is normal for a 40’ish year old, but I actually had quite a few things to choose from… Approaching big (and I mean big) bridges always gets me (Not so Tracy unfortunately 😮 ), hearing train-tracks whistling, moments before the train appears is another favourite and the mere sight of a bowl of trifle will always get my heart racing 😀 But by far the biggest thing that still gets my childish juices fizzing is this…
This Saturday sees the return of Doctor Who. As a 9 year old boy I can remember queuing up to meet the then new Doctor at a book signing. Tom Baker scribbled his name into my copy of ‘The Giant Robot’ and I walked away chewing one of his Jelly Babies. I’d watched a lot of the John Pertwee years, but Tom Baker really was my Doctor. And despite a lot of the truly awful stuff that was thrown at us in the 1980’s I’ve been obsessed by this program ever since. This Saturday we have a new Doctor, a new companion, a brand new shiny Tardis and a new’ish writer for the series… And I’m getting really excited now 🙂 David Tennant was undoubtedly superb as the 10th Doctor, but I do feel he did sometimes suffer at the hands of a few feeble scripts. With Steven Moffat in charge, I have high expectations and despite the enormously daunting challenge of having to follow Mr Tennant, early reports indicate that Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor will be brilliant. My only real complaint is that I was once again foolishly overlooked for the role of the Doctor!!! When are they finally going to give me that part?
