The complete and utter insanity that is NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is creeping ever closer. And for those unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo…
‘National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.’
It all sounds very straightforward and I guess in essence it is, but 50,000 is an awful lot of words and to then somehow cram those into just 30 days There’s no grand prize if you’re successful (just a print your own certificate), no promise of being published, just a huge sense of relief & achievement. I’ve attempted the thing 4 times already, so I’d know!!! I was successful (God knows how?) the first three attempts, but failed miserably last year, which has made me more determined than ever this year…
I’m also cheating (only slightly ), but I really don’t care!!! I guess I’m just bending the rules a little, with one of those rules stating…
‘Write a novel. We define a novel as a lengthy work of fiction. If you consider the book you’re writing a novel, we consider it a novel too!’
Well, what I consider to be a novel this year is an action packed roaring adventure about 2 couples & a troublesome little boy, bumbling their way around 7 countries in an exhausting & unexpectedly exciting 18 days… Sound familiar I have a rather tatty journal packed with scribbles & notes to guide me, which again is not strictly in keeping with the rules, but as I said, I really don’t care. I want to write, we did have a very interesting little adventure and it just seemed appropriate to put the 2 things together…
So at some point after our Halloween party (I’m guessing quite a lot after!!!), I’ll be beginning my 30 day stint, insanely tapping away at the keyboard. Watch this space…
